GT Summer Reading & Project
For your summer reading, you will complete one project and one essay. Both are due on the FIRST FRIDAY OF 5th GRADE. After watching book trailers and reviewing each book, select one novel from the table below to read this summer. You can purchase your own copy, check one out from the JHaley library, or check it out from the Irving Public Library. 1. Follow Mrs. Capulong on Twitter @MrsC5thgrade. You can ask questions and share ideas here. Resources and information will be posted here throughout the summer. 2. Pick a project from the Novel Study Menu Board. 3. Before you start your project, read through the rubric. This is how you will be graded. Make sure you know what the expectations are. 4. Write an expository essay about your novel based on the theme of heroism. Use these questions to organize your thoughts: · What is a hero? · What personal qualities would a character with heroism have? · How does a hero connect to a culture, time, or place? · How do individuals transition from the ordinary to extraordinary to become a hero? · How does society receive every-day-heroes? · How do every-day people become heroes? · What are the expectations for a hero? · What happens if a hero goes against expectations society sets for them? What makes an excellent essay? · It incorporates details and quotes from the text that enhances the thesis. · The composition is organized in a way that engages and guides the reader with smooth transitions. · The organization of the essay makes it fun and easy to read. · There are few or no errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, or capitalization. · The composition shows careful revision and is ready for publishing. · Word choice is varying and grade appropriate. 5. Both Projects will be due on the first Friday of 5th grade. Don’t forget to turn in your book if you checked it out from the Irving ISD library that day. |
